What is Virtual Machine Software?
Virtual machine software simplifies computing infrastructure by partitioning and
isolating servers in secure and transportable virtual machines each of which can
run standard Windows, Linux, or NetWare operating systems and applications. Each
virtual machine can have direct access to the host machine’s resources such
as CPU, memory, disk, networking, and peripherals.
VMware GSX Server
VMware GSX Server allows virtual machines to be automatically created, remotely
managed and standardized on a secure, uniform platform.
VMware GSX Server transforms one or more physical Intel computers into a pool of
virtual machines. Operating systems and applications are isolated in multiple virtual
machines that reside on a single piece of hardware. VMware GSX Server runs as an
application and integrates into Windows and Linux host environments. This makes
VMware GSX Server simple to deploy and manage. VMware GSX Server provides broad
hardware support by inheriting device support from the host server.
VMware GSX Server is designed for departmental server consolidation and streamlining
of development / testing operations.

VMware ESX Server
VMware ESX Server runs directly on the system hardware and is virtual machine software
for partitioning and consolidating servers in the most demanding environments. In
addition to the capabilities of VMware GSX Server, VMware ESX Server provides high
availability for servers through support of clustering of virtual systems. The solution
guarantees availability of server resources such as CPU power, memory, network bandwidth
and disk I/O.
VMware ESX Server also provides support for VMware Virtual SMP,
which enables a single virtual machine to span multiple physical processors.
VMware SX Server is designed for use with Enterprise-class server consolidation
especially where availability is a key requirement.
VMware VirtualCenter
VMware VirtualCenter provides a centralised management environment for all virtual
computing resources.
This management interface allows virtual environments to be moved around physical
resources without downtime. Workloads can be balanced across available resources
and without affecting users.
